Fast Track - Social Responsibility

As seen on CityPulse News this brief clip features Anne Carroll, President of Logotex, as she explains how her business has partnered with the community to make a social impact.

Vancouver Social Purchasing Portal

Logotex is proud to be one of the first supplier members of the Social Purchasing Portal (SPP) – a web-based application that integrates supply chain economics and corporate social responsibility to achieve community benefits. The goal of the SPP is to build healthier communities by creating employment opportunities for the hard to employ and initiating targeted business growth.

How It Works:
In the process of purchasing goods and services, companies already choose suppliers - such as food services/catering, printing, packaging, couriers, promotional materials, building maintenance, recycling and landscaping - based on the values of quality, service and price. In the Social Purchasing Portal, the purchasing companies add one other criterion to the selection process - social value.

So, all things being equal (price, quality, value, etc.) in quotes from the suppliers of goods or services, the purchaser is interested in one additional component that the provider could offer: what social value can be generated through the purchase agreement? Will the supplier of the services and goods, as a part of the contract, hire new employees from the targeted training programs? Or is the supplier of services and goods located in a geographically defined development area?

Benefits:
The Social Purchasing Portal integrates corporate social responsibility into existing business-to-business purchasing and supplier relationships and builds on the existing community based employment services and community development efforts. The components already exist - SPP is the tool that brings them together into a mutually beneficial relationship. It offers benefits to everyone participating.

Successful community economic development requires business retention and growth. The SPP markets directly to motivated purchasers, and directs contracts to participating suppliers, creating the opportunities for the local suppliers to gain a direct advantage to grow their businesses.

Communities:
The SPP promotes economic development for inner city businesses and employment opportunities for the hard-to-employ or long-term unemployed to the participating purchasers and suppliers. In the Downtown Eastside, working with the network of employment development services of FTE, the SPP suppliers sign a contract that will give employment advantages to qualified persons who are ready to re-enter the labour force.

The Social Purchasing Portal is a partnership of FTE and BCT SVP.

Glen Eden

Logotex is pleased to have raised over $20,000 from our annual golf tournaments for the Glen Eden Centre over the past years. We strongly believe that if a child is helped to become successful in the school system, they are more likely to be successful in life – and that benefits all of society.

Glen Eden is an independent, not-for-profit treatment centre and school that assists children and adolescents who are unable to function effectively in a typical school system. These students experience numerous social and scholastic failures because they process information differently. They are bright, capable kids who get beaten down by a system through no fault of their own – and Glen Eden gives them and their families a helping hand up to success!

Glen Eden is designed for the complex child who has learning challenges due to a possible combination of medical, psychological/and or psychiatric causes such as Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, anxiety or other psychosocial challenges. Established in 1984, Glen Eden is the only centre of its kind in Western North America that provides an educational setting combined with a clinical treatment focus.

• Glen Eden is best suited for the "complex" child who is unable to function   effectively in a typical school system due to a possible combination of medical,   psychological and/or psychiatric causes

• Glen Eden accepts boys and girls from grades Kindergarten to 12

• Glen Eden offers a 10-month program from September to June, a summer   program in July and August, as well as part-time and outreach programs

• Glen Eden is accredited through the British Columbia Ministry of Education

• Glen Eden accepts students from other parts of Canada, as well as   internationally. They can also assist with student residential placements

• Glen Eden enrolls children throughout the course of the school year

• Glen Eden understands that meaningful education must:

- Consider the complete child both physically and mentally
- Respond to individual needs
- Offer an environment that is experientially and conceptually rich
- Facilitate socialization
- Apply advances in research that affect learning

Glen Eden assess all aspects of a child's makeup - social, emotional, physical, and psychological, rather than focusing on specific symptoms (such as poor reading skills, etc).
